The 2007 London International Youth Science Forum will take place from July 25 until August 8. This exciting annual event brings together some 250 young science students from almost 60 countries across the five continents.
The RDS has been coordinating the selection of the Irish delegation for the LIYSF since the early 1970s. Promising science students are awarded scholarships to attend the Forum which enables them to both encounter new and exciting areas of science and meet some of the world’s best scientists. Many of Ireland’s established scientists were former students at the Forum and still acknowledge its benefits. Past LIYSF delegates include Professor Richard O’Kennedy of DCU, who coincidently is the current President of the LIYSF, and Mr Pat Kenny of RTÉ.
The Forum, whose programme of events includes: lectures; demonstrations; seminars; and, visits to world-class industrial sites and research facilities, provides an opportunity for the students’ ideas about science to be questioned, challenged and informed in ways they would never have experienced previously. In 2006 Ireland was once again well represented by the 13 third-level students that the RDS helped to send. The students, representing 11 different colleges from around the country, enjoyed themselves immensely and gained a lot both academically and personally from the experience.
