TEDtalks: Dave Eggers' tutoring center "Once Upon a School"

If you're interesting in th future of education you will love Dave Eggers and his tutoring center!

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=FaSF1gPBKrA&feature=user

"Accepting his 2008 TED Prize, author Dave Eggers asks the TED community to personally, creatively engage with local public schools. With spellbinding eagerness, he talks about how his 826 Valencia tutoring center inspired others around the world to open their own volunteer-driven, wildly creative writing labs. But you don't need to go that far, he reminds us -- it's as simple as asking a teacher "How can I help?" He asks that we share our own volunteering stories at his new website, Once Upon a School."

Restoring fisheries, conserving aquatic life, rebuilding ecosystems: Researching the options

in this short movie, Rashid Sumaila analyses the alarming global issue of fisheries subsidies and its dreadful consequences for high and deep sea forms of life.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bfmyw-3yys

Rashid is an Associate Professor and Director of the Fisheries Economics Research Unit at UBC.

more about him on his web page:

"Our planet's fisheries have reached their ecological limits. As benefits from fisheries decrease, pressure grows to develop other sources of revenue, not necessarily compatible with ecosystem health.

Policy and planning for ecosystem-based management must then be informed by knowledge of the interplay of human, biotic and environmental factors that affect ecosystem structure and function. Key requirements are sufficient time-depth to capture biodiversity, abundance and trophic structure prior to depletion, identification of the full range of benefits that healthy ecosystems provide to present and future generations and integration of the fine-scale knowledge of the maritime community with large-scale national and international fisheries management."

Expanding the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences by opening 15 new centers across Africa in five years

"Accepting his 2008 TED Prize, physicist Neil Turok speaks out for talented young Africans starved of opportunity: by unlocking and nurturing the continent's creative potential, we can create a change in Africa's future. Turok asks the TED community to help him expand the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences by opening 15 new centers across Africa in five years. By adding resources for entrepreneurship to this proven model, he says, we can create a network for progress across the continent -- and perhaps discover an African Einstein."

if you are short of time start form 13th minute!

Thanks Francois for the info!

FIELD ACTION SCIENCE (FACTS) REPORTS : CALL FOR PAPERS: ECONOMY/DEVELOPMENT AND HEALTH

Tagged:  •    •    •

FACTS Reports is a unique forum that will publish manuscripts and opinion pieces related to field-based activities within various topic areas: economics, health, education, agriculture, urban planning and environmental issues. FACTS will focus on activities in developing countries and impoverished areas of developed countries. During its first stage, FACTS will develop journals devoted to economic development and health.

Objectives
The goal of this journal is to collect and disseminate knowledge and best practices on field activities. Many professionals work in developing countries to address issues related to economics, health, agriculture, education, environment and development in general. Frequently, these activities do not have an evaluation component or when an evaluation does occur, no forum exists to communicate results to a broader audience. Consequently, knowledge is capitalized poorly resulting in the perpetuation of bad practices and lack of recognition and visibility for good practices. The aim of FACTS Reports is to fill this gap.
FACTS Reports will include peer review with a requirement that peers work in the field themselves. This process will ensure critical input from world experts, allow for cooperation and competition among authors, and promote a high level of science.

Readership
FACTS reports will provide a platform of communication and exchange among field-based professionals. It will improve communication, evaluation of methods, capitalisation of knowledge, and recognition of best practices. In a second stage, FACTS will promote other activities such as training courses, symposia, and educational awards.
Subject Coverage
Suitable topics for FACTS Reports related to economy, development and health include, but are not limited to:
• Development finance
• Education, employment policies
• Social policies
• Trade capacity building, actions related to globalization
• Rural development
• Evaluation methods
• Health care delivery
• Pharmaceutical pricing and drug distribution
• Public health delivery
• Access to health care
• Equity in health care distribution
• Novel health care and public health delivery technologies and methodologies
• Effective practice
• Health promotion
• Health education
• Health systems and health care supply
• Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in health projects

WAYS.org is number one on Google!

Try it yourself!

When you enter ways as a keyword, ways.org is ranked number one
and PYRN, hosted by WAYS, is 9th!

Given the common usage of the word "ways" in english, that's quite an achievement.
We are on a good track.

Germany: XLAB organizes two International Science Camps in 2008

In the summer of 2008 XLAB organizes the International Science Camps in
the sixth year of uninterrupted succession. In 2008 XLAB organizes two International Science Camps.

first Camp from June 16th to July 8th,

second Camp from July 28th to August 19th

They are geared to interested high school students, undergraduate college and university students, aged about 17 to 20 years. Courses are offered in biology, chemistry, physics and computer science and supervised by scientists of the University of Göttingen and affiliated research organizations.
The students work in small groups of two or three. All experiments are hands-on experiments. Demonstrations are rarely used and limited only to highly sophisticated experiments, to the use of NMR, X-Ray or other large research instruments. During the XLAB International Science Camps English is the language used among students, teachers and scientists.

At the weekends and in the evenings a cultural and social program is arranged. Social contacts among students of different cultural background are as important as experimental work and scientific learning. All social activities are accompanied by experienced teachers.
The science camp last for 3 ½ weeks, including an excursion to Berlin
during the last three days. The costs for the camp 2008 are 1.750 € which is all-inclusive except for the travel expenses to Göttingen and from Berlin. Financial support
is possible. Application for a scholarship should be submitted before March 15th.

More information about the camps can be found on the XLAB website:
