My name is Orou Gaoue. I am a forester and PhD candidate (Botany) and Teaching Assistant (Biology) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. My research interest is in assessing the ecological impact of non-timber forest product (NTFP) harvest by indigenous people. For my dissertation, I am particularly investigating the impact of multi-organ (bark and foliage) and multipurpose (medicine and fodder) harvest on the genetic diversity and demography of Khaya senegalensis (Meliaceae) in Benin; I am also looking at how climatic variations and NTFP harvesting may interact to shape the response of populations to harvest. I am interested in understanding the way indigenous people’s perception of K. senegalensis response to harvest affect their future harvesting practices in Benin.
