Postdoc position in cancer biology

Application Deadline:
March 4, 2008

Location(s)

Utrecht
Netherlands
Job Duration:
Contract

Project description:
Metastases formation is a major factor in disease progression and accounts for the majority of cancer deaths. The molecular mechanisms controlling invasion, dissemination to blood or lymphatic systems and tumor spread of tumor cells to distant organs are still poorly understood. Recent observations indicate that the metastatic phenotype may already be present during the angiogenic switch of tumors. One of crucial rate-limiting events during human tumor growth is encountered when tumors outgrow the pre-existing vasculature leading to hypoxia (oxygen insufficiency). Intratumoral hypoxia is a hallmark of solid cancers. Hypoxic tumors have a higher tendency to metastasize and are clinically characterized by therapy resistance and a poor prognosis. The Hypoxia Inducible Factors (HIF) are key molecules in the hypoxic response and play critical roles during tumor cell expansion by regulating energy metabolism and the induction of angiogenesis. Our lab recently identified TWIST1: an oncogene involved in resistance to apoptosis and inducer of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition as a key target of HIF.
This main topics of this project are.
1. Further characterization of the role of TWIST1 in hypoxia response in vitro and in vivo
2. Clonal analysis (Molecular imaging) of hypoxic tumor cells in vivo.
3. Development of therapeutic antibodies to eliminate hypoxic tumor cell in vivo.

PostDoc: How can electronic debate improve water management in coastal areas?

Application Deadline:
December 31, 2007

Location(s)

Montpellier
France
Job Duration:
Contract

Background
This research takes place within the French national project Intermed (http://intermed.rnsc.fr , National Research Agency, Software Technology program – 2007-2010 – 400 men.month – 7 partners including 4 private companies) which aims at developing new appropriated and efficient internet infrastructures to support territorial charters negotiation and implementation.

It is based on 9 experimental protocols to be held in 4 French coastal regions (Camargue, Thau, Narbonnaise, Bretagne), in relation with operational issues. Different modules will be developed and integrated to be tested by large scale groups of real stakeholders (policy makers, citizens). 4 PhD are held within the project. Some details in annex.

The scientific background of this research proposal meets two main issues:
• Integrated water management in its social and political dimensions, dealing with
governance, institutions and public participation, in the context of coastal area
• Electronic democracy.
The chosen epistemology is based on experimental protocols where real actors and issues are at stake, but where attention is kept over the controllability and evaluation of the processes and outcomes, in many dimensions.
Although scientific communities exist for both topics, very few specific and systematic design and evaluation has been made aiming at assessing the contribution of the emerging electronic mediating infrastructures on integrated water management.

Objectives
This post-doctoral research aims at contributing methodologically to the analysis and
evaluation of the impact of electronic debates and the related internet infrastructures on actual water management and water governance in coastal area.
The first sub-objective is, based on the reference literature and the state-of-the-art research, to propose an inductive theory of the process (cognitive and social impacts of the electronic mediation on the users as individuals and groups). This should then be used deductively to design the experiments. A journal paper must be produced as an outcome. Meanwhile the evaluation strategy must be clarified, using previous results from the European projects HarmoniCOP, HarmoniQUA, Aquastress and Newater.
The next requirement is to participate in the design of the field experimental protocols
(software service, target groups, issues, organisation, monitoring, feedback…), and to help implementing and monitoring some of them (one or two series, according to the duration of the contract). Specific attention will be paid to the combination of ex-ante, tracking and expost evaluation. Results should be published in a second journal paper.
Final requirement is to structure conclusions from the protocols, and propose a method to infer conclusions in terms of design. A third paper should be produced then.

Profile:
• PhD in computer sciences, cognitive sciences, sociology, political sciences, or other
relevant topic
• Knowledge and practice of electronic democracy, e-government, forums, community
web, groupware…
• Strong analytical capacities in terms of cognitive and social models
• Knowledge and practice of behavioural and / or social analysis
• Capacity to communicate and animate meetings
• Reading and speaking French is required, not fluently, but enough to be able to read
French materials, and interact with the stakeholders and the partners (project’s
meetings and protocols in French). Daily interaction with the project supervision can
be made in english.
• English spoken and written
NB: some PhD positions are also offered in the project. Contact us. The post-doc candidate could propose to associate some MSc students he would already know and have worked with.

Analysis of geomorphological and hydrological processes in permafrost and periglacial environments, CNRS, Paris

Application Deadline:
January 9, 2008

Location(s)

Paris
France
Job Duration:
Permanent

As part of the International Polar Year, cold regions (polar and sub-polar) were highlighted because of their sensitivity to the recent global warming. Thus, permafrost and periglacial environnements are directly triggered by the increase of the air and soil temperatures, that directly impact the functioning of fluvial systems. The researcher will focus his study on the analysis of geomorphological and hydrological processes in permafrost and periglacial environments (mainly Siberia and Spitsbergen). The approach will be based on multi-scale and pluridisciplinary methods. Data acquisition from the field study will allow quantification of periglacial processes, dissolved loads and sediment transferts at the scale of hydrosystems.
The candidate will prepare for an entrance examination for a permanent position at the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) 15km from Paris, France. Application deadline is 9 January 2008 but you must contact the project coordinator, Francois Costard, francois.costard@u-psud.fr, by early December. Speaking French is not essential but would be a plus nonetheless.

Postdoc on adaptive spectral modeling for audio signal processing

Application Deadline:
February 15, 2008

Location(s)

Rennes
France
Job Duration:
Temporary

We are seeking to recruit a postdoctoral researcher on adaptive spectral
modeling of audio signals, applied to source separation and object-based
sound scene description (full subject below). The successful candidate
will work in the METISS group at the public research institute IRISA
under the supervision of Drs. Emmanuel Vincent and Rémi Gribonval.

Prospective candidates should have a background in signal processing and
hold a PhD from may 2007 or after or be about to obtain one. Additional
knowledge about audio is appreciated. Informal enquiries may be made to
Emmanuel Vincent (emmanuel.vincent [at] irisa.fr).

This appointment will start fall 2008 and salary will be at 28000 euros
per annum. Applications must be submitted online before february 15th at
http://www.inria.fr/travailler/mrted/en/postdoc/details.html?nPo...

Semi-adaptive spectrum models for audio signal processing

Most audio signals are mixtures of several sources present at the same
time: speakers, musical instruments, natural sounds. The modeling of
these sources is the core problem behind many audio signal processing
tasks, such as source separation, content classification and
speech/music transcription. The most general family of models consists
of representing the short-term power spectrum of each source as a linear
combination of basis spectra learned on single-source training data. The
adaptation of these models to the considered mixture is bound to improve
performance. However existing adaptation techniques often fail, due to
the large number of free parameters per source.

Our team has recently started to investigate a new adaptation paradigm
for such models, whereby generic constraints satisfied by a range of
audio sources are specified on the model parameters. This reduces the
number of free parameters, hence improving the quality of adaptation and
removing the need for single-source training data. For instance,
harmonicity can be enforced by representing each basis spectrum as a
linear combination of fixed spectra each representing a few adjacent
harmonic partials. The spectral envelope of each basis spectrum is then
learned by adapting the combination weights.

The first goal of this postdoc is to validate this paradigm in a fully
general context by designing and testing a larger set of appropriate
constraints. Possible constraints include: inharmonicity or wideband
character of the basis spectra, source-filter model of the spectral
envelope, transient or continuous character of the combination weight
sequences. A second goal is to propose a way of exploiting the available
spatial information for model adaptation. A promising approach consists
of modeling and tracking the interchannel intensity difference of each
source, in addition to its power spectrum.

The proposed paradigm is expected to have a high impact on the
processing of audio data within large databases, where single-source
training data are typically unavailable due to the huge range of
possible sources. The results will be primarily evaluated for the task
of source separation on a large range of audio mixtures, including
speech, music and natural sound scenes. Depending on the research
background of the applicant, additional tasks will be considered such as
temporal decomposition of speech, multiple pitch estimation of music or
sound object identification within natural sound scenes.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme “Neglected Communicable Tropical Diseases and Related Public Health Research”

Application Deadline:
March 31, 2008

Location(s)

Bamako
Mali
Job Duration:
Temporary

[note 1: the place can be chosen by the applicant, as can the start date
note 2: the application process is rather unusual in that, as a first step, you have to submit - by March 31 - a conference abstract]

The neglected tropical diseases are a group of 14 infectious diseases which affect more than one billion people worldwide, mainly in Africa and mostly living in extreme poverty. Beyond their negative impact on health, NTDs contribute to an ongoing cycle of poverty and stigma that leaves tens of millions unable to work, go to school or participate in family and community life.

This Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme, funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation, Merieux Foundation, Nuffield Foundation, and the Volkswagen Foundation, supports the development of locally devised and led African research on neglected communicable tropical diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Programme:

* provides funding for outstanding young African researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa to carry out relevant, applied research at African research institutions. Scientific visits to non-African scientific institutions may be included but must not exceed more than 4 months annually.
* focuses on translational or operational research questions and therefore proposals are welcome that address the public health issues related to preventing and treating neglected communicable tropical diseases, including those from social scientists, such as medical anthropologists, as well as from biomedical researchers.
* offers 3-year Junior Fellowships to recently qualified African postdoctoral researchers and 3-year Extended Fellowships for more experienced researchers. Depending on the success of this initiative, further support may be possible so that Fellows can progress from postdoctoral researcher to research group leader positions.
* draws on collaboration between African and European research institutions, with the Fellow determining with which European institution he/she proposes to collaborate and on what research issues and topics.
* provides for additional support to the Fellows beyond salary, travel and research costs – the Mentorship Programme will enable the Fellows to establish links to leading African and non-African scientists and training will be provided in key career skills such as proposal writing and communication at annual meetings of all Fellows.

Note: The application and selection process is in three stages. The deadline for the first stage, submission of abstracts for an international conference, is 31 March 2008. Abstracts for the conference should be sent in English to ntd2008@volkswagenstiftung.de. Applicants can not proceed to the second stage unless they have been invited to the conference.
Eligibility:

Applicants

Applicants for junior fellowships must be postdoctoral researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa. The necessary degree (MD or PhD) must have been granted by the end of 2008.

For the extended fellowships, postdoctoral researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa (MD or PhD) must have substantial research experience (for example 3 years of postdoctoral experience or substantial pre-doctoral research experience); applicants will need to demonstrate experience and achievements (as documented by publication record) appropriate to the extended funding and mini-group leader responsibilities.

Applicants from Sub-Saharan countries outside South Africa and applicants returning to Sub-Saharan countries are particularly encouraged to apply for both the junior and the extended fellowships.

Projects

The Programme focuses on neglected communicable tropical diseases (NTD). Diseases in the focus of the initiative are neglected tropical diseases (including where appropiate the vectors) relevant to Africa, e.g. Schistosomiasis, the filariases , soil transmitted helminths, Buruli ulcer, Human Trypanosomiasis, but also bacterial meningitis, viral diarrhoea, etc. Projects on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria will NOT be considered unless, in exceptional cases, for example if candidates are aiming at the development of new methods and techniques that might be directly transferable to other tropical diseases or address co-infection between these diseases and NTDs. In such cases applicants should demonstrate that support for their project is not available in dedicated funding portfolios of other organisations focussing on these diseases.

The biomedical or related public health research projects must address priority translational or operational research questions in the African context. Projects should preferably be linked to ongoing programmes which are delivering interventions to provide a relevant framework for the research. Clinical trials without significant basic research components will not be considered. The work should also aim at the development and establishment of new methods/techniques and/or address research questions related to diagnosis/surveillance, treatment and/or prevention. Where appropriate, projects should bridge biomedical and public health research questions.

Fellowship Rates

For both the junior and extended fellowships, the official grant recipient will be the scientific host institution at which the Fellow will be employed. Basic infrastructure should be provided by the host African institutions; the fellowship can provide administrative costs for the host institution up to a maximum of 5.000 EUR.

1. Junior Fellowship

The Fellowship covers salary, research and travel costs up to a maximum of 90.000 EUR over 3 years.

In addition, up to 10.000 EUR for an optional Mentorship Programme can be applied for, to enable the Fellow to establish links to two leading scientists of their choice (one from an African and one from a non-African institution) independent from the research project itself, e.g. by annual meetings between the fellow and the mentors or by inviting mentors to the fellow’s host institution. These leading scientists must agree to act as supporters for the Fellow – assisting with their career development through, for instance, introducing them to peer networks and helping them to publish in international journals. Please note, that a collaboration with a research institution in Europe is essential

The budget items must be justified for by the applicant and could include:

* Salary of Fellow (depending on customary local salaries and experience).
* Travelling to conferences/workshops.
* Scientific visits to African/non-African institutions of up to 3-4 months per year.
* Additional Mentorship Program (optional, max. 10.000 EUR). Annual meetings between the applicant and a maximum of 2 mentors (one from an African and one from a non-African institution).
* Language courses or courses for project management.
* Consumables.
* Costs of field work (but not vehicle purchase).
* Publication costs.
* Small equipment (max. 20% of total budget).

2. Extended Fellowship

The Fellowship covers salary, research and travel costs up to a maximum of 140.000 EUR over 3 years.

* Salary of 1-2 PhD students involved in the project, (co-)supervised by the applicant.
* Salary of up to 1 technician/research assistant.
* Travelling to conferences/workshops.
* Participation in field work and associated costs (but not vehicle purchase).
* Consumables.
* Publication costs.
* Equipment (max. 20 % of total budget). Basic infrastructure should be provided by the host institutions.

Application and selection process:

This is a three-stage process:

Stage 1:

African postdoctoral researchers apply for participation in an international conference “Neglected Tropical Diseases 2008” (“NTD 2008”). Applications for this stage must be received by 31 March 2008. Decisions on this first selection process will be made by the end of May 2008.

The conference itself will be held in September 2008 in West Africa. It will offer invited key-note lectures and contributions by leading scientists in the field as well as providing networking opportunities. Successful applicants will be invited to either give oral or poster presentations.

Stage 2:

Those invited to the conference will be asked to submit a full proposal (including a detailed working plan for their research) by 15 August 2008. Project ideas must be designed by the African
