Scientists have largely been successful, developing vaccines against a wide array of viruses and bacteria, thereby eliminating many childhood diseases due to infectious diseases. Vaccination efforts are considered one of the greatest contributions to public health. An example of this lies in the eradication of smallpox, announced by the World Health Organization in 1980(1).
