PhD position in Stem Cell Biology for 2 years with the possibility of extension

Our group is a part of the Institute of Neurophysiology (Director: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Hescheler) located at the University of Cologne (Germany). The Institute is part of the Medical Faculty and is traditionally involved in stem cell research.

Our group is engaged in the exploration of systems involve in mouse, rhesus and human embryonic stem (ES) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell differentiation towards neural and myocardial lineages. More limited is the knowledge on the mechanisms for overall modulation and integration of signals which drive the specific activation of transcriptional systems at a certain differentiation stage.
We are seeking a highly motivated, independent thinking, team- and hard-working candidate with a solid understanding and practical experience in cellular biology and physiology.

The successful candidate will be responsible for determining the role of some specific selected factors in the differentiation and staging of ES and iPS cells of rodent and human origin, leading to a better understanding of the molecular networks and signals governing differentiation. Experimental approaches will include both classical cell and molecular biology techniques and advanced technology such as electrophysiology, calcium imaging and microarray.

The applicants must hold a Diploma/Master degree or equivalent in biology and must be fluent in English. The knowledge in the field of embryonic stem cells, molecular biology and electrophysiology is desirable.
