The 8th edition of the AfricaGIS Conference-Exhibition will take place on the premises of the "Complexe Salle de Conferences Ouaga 2000" in the southern part of Ouagadougou, capital city of Burkina Faso.
www.africagis2007.gov.bf

Start: 18/09/2007 00:57

Location: University of Sussex, Brighton, UK
Date: 18 - 20 September 2007
Organised by: Development Studies Association

Description

Rapid advances in science and technology create both opportunities and threats, and increasingly attract attention from policymakers, the media and researchers. What can development studies contribute to understanding these trends, and influencing processes and outcomes in innovations to ensure maximum benefit for the poor? In what ways might a focus on science, society and development lead to a rethinking of what development and development studies has to offer?

The DSA 2007 Conference will be hosted by the Institute of Development Studies on the theme of "Connecting Science, Society and Development". We are inviting proposals from study groups and individuals to run one or more working groups during the three-day conference.

Emerging patterns of scientific and technological change offer a new lens through which to consider major themes such as global inequality, power relations and governance, and the place of gender, social difference and culture. The conference will explore these issues by addressing topics such as agricultural biotechnologies, health technologies, climate change and citizen knowledge, and explore broader cross-cutting themes such as the relationship between learning and social change and relationships between science, knowledge and policy.

Registration Information

Early bird registration is available before 7 July 2007, with US$80 off the whole event or US$30 off individual days. Days usually cost US$130 or the whole event US$470.

The DSA has some funds available for bursaries to support comparatively junior academics, or development practitioners, from developing countries to travel to the United Kingdom for the 2007 Annual Conference.

Successful applicants for these bursaries will have completed their doctoral research studies within the last five years, which will be interpreted as being no earlier than the beginning of 2002.

In order to qualify for these bursaries the applicants will have to provide a) an abstract, b) a full conference paper, c) a current CV, and d) an estimate of their travel and associated costs. It is expected that successful applicants will have an association with a DSA Institutional member or with a DSA Individual member.

Enquiries should be directed in the first instance to the Executive Director of the DSA (admin@devstud.org.uk ), to request an application form.

Description
Biotechnology is a highly powerful technology designed for leading significant positive environmental and socio-economic impacts. At the same time, knowledgeable and constantly updated human resources are needed to foster benefits and reduce risks.

There is a great need to develop and continuously update Latin American professionals responsible for the decision process. The chosen topics of the workshop reflect current doubts faced by regulators in the area.

The training workshop on biosafety will include formal lectures on biosafety, and several sessions of hands-on exercises on the regulatory review process. There will be an analysis and discussion on the near term evolution and challenges in GM biosafety, namely the developments of GM crops.

The course is primarily aimed at people who will be in a position to review applications for the deliberate release of GM crops. The audience will consist of current or potential members of regulatory bodies acting in the context of national competent authorities.

The course will also be of interest to people engaged in the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol at national and regional levels. Priority for attendance will be given to applicants who are already working in GM crop regulatory offices or who are expected to do so in the future.
