Web 2.0 technologies are more than just web-based games and social networks; these virtual environments are building communities of thought and practice which have very real implications for education and research in academia. How do educators, administrators, and librarians use or repurpose these tools to their advantage? What are the implications for teaching and research? Is the return on our investment of time and energy worth the engagement? How well do students learn through these collaborative avenues? What are the true benefits for scientific research? What are the potential conflicts or roadblocks? We will explore these questions and many more.

The 2nd International Conference ”Climate Change as a challenge for poverty reduction” will take place in Bonn, Germany from 30-31st of May, 2008.

The consequences of climate change are of ever increasing importance for development politics. Climate change poses a significant threat to the goals of the fight against poverty. The UN negotiations for a new global climate change treaty are gaining momentum; but without the consideration of the development politics' perspective an equitable climate treaty is impossible.

In the run-up to the UN Climate Conference in Bonn (2-13 June 2008) Germanwatch will hold on the 30 May (introduction and discussion, only in German language) and the 31 May (whole-day conference) an international conference on climate change and Poverty reduction.

Workshops will address specific themes in greater detail (e.g. climate change and food security, adaptation, deforestation, climate alliances). The conference will serve as a forum for opinion and information, and will send a signal to the UN Climate Negotiations: the path to a just Climate Treaty must be made clear.

Germanwatch in cooperation with the Heinrich-Böll- Fondation NRW and other partners with financial support from the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The DEISA Symposium will take part over two days. The first day will feature talks from key players in the field of HPC e-Infrastructures including DEISA, and also from PRACE. The second day will see talks from prominent DEISA users, reporting on both their experience of the DEISA infrastructure and on their ground-breaking results.

The DEISA Symposium is traditionally held once a year during the Spring. This is the fourth Symposium, and previous Symposia were held in Paris, Bologna and Munich. As per tradition, the Symposium will start with lunch on the first day and end with lunch on the second day.

Message from the organisers

It is a great pleasure for our labs to host the fourth International Conference on Speech Prosody in Campinas, Brazil. Speech Prosody 2008 is the fourth conference of a series promoted by the Special Interest Group on Speech Prosody (SProSIG) of the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA). The first one was held in Aix-en-Provence, France, in 2002, followed biennally by Nara, Japan (2004), and Dresden, Germany (2006). Now time has come for a change of place and hemisphere by welcoming prosody researchers in Brazil.
About Campinas

Campinas is São Paulo State's second major city with about 1 million inhabitants. It is the city of Carlos Gomes, a famous classic composer of the XIXth century and author of the Guarani opera. The name of the city, meaning "meadows", derives from its longer, older name, Campinas do Mato Grosso, a resting place settled for the Bandeirantes expeditions, going to the Caminho dos Goiases, during the XVIIIth century. The city was widely known in the XIXth century for the sugar cane and coffee plantations, which can be seen even nowadays in the outskirts of the city.
Speech Prosody

Speech prosody covers a multidisciplinary area of research involving scientists working on the suprasegmental aspects of speech, having very different backgrounds and coming from different traditions, including linguistics and phonetics, conversation analysis, semantics and pragmatics, sociolinguistics, acoustics, speech synthesis and recognition, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, speech therapy and language teaching, among others.
Call for Papers

The Call for Papers will be delivered by May 2007, inviting participants to contribute in all areas of speech prosody. We particularly invite the community to renew and broaden the interest in Rhythm Analysis and Modelling, Grammar and Discourse, Pathological Speech Prosody, as well as L2 Acquisition Prosody.

Best Regards,
The Organising Committee
