Environmental Mutagen Society 39th Annual Meeting: "Genes and the Environment: From Molecular Mechanisms to Risk" (Puerto Rico)

Start: 2008-10-18 00:58

End: 2008-10-22 00:58

This year's annual meeting will be taking place in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As my involvement in the Society has expanded to roles in coordinating workshops on grant writing, as well as contributing to scientific platform sessions, the Society has demonstrated a particularly strong interest in young scientists. Below is some information currently on the Society's website, which is specific for the upcoming 2008 meeting.

Conference Overview

Why Attend the EMS Meeting?

The Environmental Mutagen Society is the primary professional society for scientists involved in understanding mechanisms of DNA repair and mutagenesis, the consequences of mutation such as cancer, and the evaluation of risk from genotoxic agents for mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, or birth defects and other disorders. The Society, and the Annual Meeting, are unique in bringing together scientists carrying out basic research with those involved in risk estimation and regulatory concerns related to the consequences of exposure to environmental and pharmaceutical agents. The result is a dynamic meeting that is sufficiently large enough to cover a broad range of contemporary topics yet focused and small enough to facilitate interactions between students and renowned scientists in academia, government, and industry.

The theme of the EMS 39th Annual Meeting is "Genes and the Environment: From Molecular Mechanisms to Risk." The broad objective of the meeting is to provide a forum for integrating cutting-edge basic research in DNA repair, mechanisms of mutagenesis, and epigenetic regulation in response to environmental genotoxic agents with translational research, risk assessment, and regulatory concerns. Such cross-disciplinary integration is a unique strength of the EMS and is critically important for resolution of societal issues involving genotoxicity from environmental exposures and genetic susceptibility. This meeting will also have a strong emphasis on networking opportunities for Latin American scientists with colleagues from Canada and the U.S., including Puerto Rico, as well as major educational and student outreach components.

The 2008 EMS Annual Meeting offers very special opportunities for collaboration and networking. Given the resort venue in Puerto Rico and the unique opportunities of the destination, EMS has decided to depart from the standard meeting schedule for this meeting. Each day except the last will include an afternoon "fun-in-the-sun" break to allow attendees to enjoy the beautiful tropical environment with their colleagues, with scientific sessions in the morning, late afternoon, and evening. Symposia, plenary lectures, topical reviews, workshops, and contributed poster and platform sessions will provide the latest information covering the range of scientific interests within the EMS.

EMS invites you to join your colleagues in Puerto Rico, and hopes that you will enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and beautiful location while renewing old friendships and making new acquaintances.

Conference Overview

Scientific Sessions will be held in the morning until Noon each day. On Sunday and Monday, the science will resume at 4:00 PM with a break for dinner at 6:15 PM. Plenary Lectures have been scheduled on those days for 7:30 PM, followed by poster sessions and exhibits from 8:30 PM–10:30 PM. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Plenary Lectures are part of the morning scientific sessions. Following the mid-day Business Meeting, Tuesday afternoon is free up to the evening banquet, and an optional tour to historic Old San Juan will be offered. Platform sessions are on Tuesday and Wednesday, and two Topical Reviews are scheduled on Wednesday morning. Wednesday features a full day of scientific sessions, with adjournment at 5:30 PM.

The scientific program will include 16 symposia, four Plenary Lectures, two topical reviews, four workshops, two poster sessions, and four platform sessions. The latter will feature short talks selected from among the submitted abstracts. An "extra" Saturday poster session is designed to foster interactions between students and new investigators and their more seasoned colleagues and is integrated with a welcome reception. The student poster session will be immediately preceded by a workshop devoted to mentoring that will kickoff a new EMS mentoring program developed during the past year to nurture students, postdocs, and early career investigators in the environmental health sciences. A Sunday noon workshop will be the forum for the newly organized group "Women in the Environmental Mutagen Society" (WEMS) and will feature a prominent speaker on issues of particular relevance to women in science. A special feature of this year’s meeting, in recognition of the unique opportunities presented by the Puerto Rican venue, will be a symposium on "Global Health in the Americas: The Impact of the Environment" that showcases Latin American environmental science. It will feature outstanding speakers of Latin American origin and will serve as a focus for networking opportunities and development of collaborations between U.S., Canadian, and Latin American scientists working in environmental genetic toxicology and related areas.

The program represents the full spectrum of strengths of our uniquely multi-disciplinary Society and includes something for everyone. The detailed agenda and information about the meeting are located under the Meeting Agenda. We invite you to experience the friendly and warm culture of EMS in Puerto Rico.

International Carrot Conference

Start: 2008-11-01 15:46

End: 2008-11-01 15:46

Carrot production is a major crop in many other areas of California such as the Central Coast, Salinas Valley, Imperial Valley, Cuyama Valley, and recently the Antelope Valley. But the Southern San Joaquin Valley has perhaps become the hotbed of carrot production. With the major processors headquartered in Kern County, carrots are processed year round in several carrot packing and processing facilities in the county. Carrot production in California has grown so large in the past several years that over 75 percent of the total production for the United States is coming from California.

The change to a healthier life style by Americans and the popularity of baby cut carrots has been perhaps the primary reasons in the increased demand of carrots. The reason why carrots has become essentially a California commodity is that it is possible to grow carrots year round in the state and the abundant areas with sandy loam soils that quality carrots require.

Through the California Fresh Carrot Advisory Board, the California carrot industry has been leading the way in sponsoring carrot research. University of California scientists have worked on important issues facing the carrot industry such as disease management, reduction of fumigant emissions, nematode control, weed control, variety evaluations, and various other projects. It also sponsors research by scientists from USDA, Oregon State, and Washington State looking at breeding for nematode resistance and variety improvement, and seed borne pathogens.

During February 10th through the 13th, visitors from near and far will gather in Bakersfield for the 29th International Carrot Conference. Here, university and government scientists, private breeders, production people, and other industry leaders will gather to listen to the latest information concerning carrot production.

Sessions will include nematology, plant pathology, breeding and cultivar evaluations, soil microbiology, carrot production, and environmental issues. Other events planned include a banquet with a keynote speaker, field tours, and day at the World Ag Expo in Tulare.

To register for the event call 661-868-6200 for a registration form or download one from www.vric.ucdavis.edu/carrot.

2nd International Symposium on Biological control of bacterial plant diseases

Start: 2008-11-04 14:39

End: 2008-11-07 14:39

Focus
Following the 1st International Symposium on Biological Control of Bacterial Plant Diseases held in Darmstadt/Seeheim Germany, we are planning the second symposium to continue the focus on biological control of bacterial plant diseases. Therefore, along with continued discussions of the status of biocontrol measures in most commercial crops, the organizing committee herewith invites all plant pathologists to initiate a broad discussion about all aspects of biological control of bacterial plant diseases. It should include promotion and development of environmentally safe control strategies, both current and as a potential future opportunity.

OpenOffice.org annual international conference, OOoCon 2008 - Beijing, China, November 5th-7th

Start: 2008-11-05 00:00

End: 2008-11-07 23:59

The Event
The OpenOffice.org Annual International Conference (OOoCon) is the premier event for anyone interested in or working with OpenOffice.org. OOoCon is where representatives of all the community projects meet to celebrate and learn from the achievements of the past twelve months, and discuss how to meet the challenges of the next twelve.

OOoCon 2008 is a double first - it's the first OOoCon to be held outside Europe, and it will also see the biggest concentration of OOo developers ever assembled in one location on this planet. Thanks to generous funding from the OOoCon sponsors, we will try to ensure that everyone who should be in Beijing, can be in Beijing. If you have ever contributed to OOo, or want to find out how to get involved - mark the date in your diary now!

The Location
RedOffice ScreenshotSince Redflag 2000 and IBM officially joined OpenOffice.org in 2007, Beijing has become the second hot-spot for the development of OpenOffice.org and several derived products. The contributions to OOo from China are steadily growing. It's an exciting time: China's software developers and users are able to look at office software with fresh minds, untainted by years of exposure to Microsoft products. Beijing, the Chinese capital, is at the centre of this activity. A cosmopolitan city with a rich history, it has re-invented and renovated itself for the Olympic games this year, making 2008 the ideal year to pay a visit.

The People
OOo MentorEvery year, OOoCon receives great feedback from attendees. It's not just a unique opportunity to network with fellow enthusiasts, it's also a great social occasion. Come and meet the real people behind the email addresses and the IRC nicknames. We look forward particuarly to welcoming a large number of attendees from the East and South-East Asian communities, especially Japan, Vietnam and Korea. This year's OOoCon is a wonderful opportunity for developers from East and West to meet and exchange experience and ideas.
