* Documentation for the conference
As part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, ICSU is organizing a conference for young scientists that will allow them to discuss some of today’s important scientific challenges in a multidisciplinary and international environment. Participants in this conference, which will take place in Lindau in Germany from 4-6 April 2007, will be nominated and sponsored by ICSU Members and Interdisciplinary Bodies around the world.
The conference, “Global Scientific Challenges: Perspectives from Young Scientistsâ€, will bring together about 200 young scientists and will address the following topics:
1. International cooperation
2. Transdisciplinary collaboration
3. Public engagement
4. Science for policy
5. Scientific freedom and responsibilities
6. Science and the private sector.
The conference is planned to be a truly unique event that is quite different from traditional conferences that focus on just one discipline or topic. It should also provide unprecedented opportunities for networking amongst leading young scientists from a wide range of disciplines and countries.
Nominated scientists will under 35 years old. The scientists will also have shown a genuine and active interest in at least one of the scientific topics to be discussed at the conference, which are environmental change, sustainable development, human health and basic research and discovery.
The aim is to include scientists who work in a variety of different settings, including universities, government laboratories, industry, science policy and management, and science communication. The working language of the conference is English.
Please the idea of young
By NgumPlease the idea of young Scientist and age limit is abit disturbing. I beleive that Africa is a third world Country but countries such as South Africa have more opportunities and are more advanced than other Countries and so are more liable to become young scientists earlier in life than other African Countries. Please reconsider your stand on age limit as a young Scientist.Thanks.

There is hope though we
By Tony Odiwe. There is hope though we really need to do many things right especially politically to have a government that will be responsible and invest heavily on education.A government that will be able to change our universities and colleges from teaching centre to a research center.
Let me agree with Ngum that
By Davies MwetaLet me agree with Ngum that the idea of young Scientist and age limit is abit disturbing. There is need to revisit the age limi, may be to 45. Other countries have had more opportunities and so others have become young scientists earlier in life than other African Countries.
Example in Malawi, you are likely to get through college at the age of 23 and above and opprtunities to have a Masters Degree let alone a PhD take ages unless you are directly absorbed into the university System. mostly ou get a Bachelors Degree and seek work to bail out yourself and relations out of poverty in your village.
So by the time you get a Masters, it may be ten years after first degree and PhD for 4 years may not come by immediately after Masters. By the time you have a PhD, you are about 40 or above. Perhaps age limit should be raised a bit to accomodate other countries where oppotunities are rare.
I do not agree with Davies
By pcillayI do not agree with Davies and Ngum. The reason why young scientists in Africa are never given a chance to discover who they are in terms of science is because they are masked by the well established scientists in the age group of 40 and above.Even though in some African countries it takes time to establish yourself, let us also acknowledge the fact that things are changing time and again elsewhere in Africa.
It will really be nice if we give the young scientists a chance to network and let us not do to them what has been done to us.The young scientists need space and time to be young scientists we can count on tomorow when we are in our mid-forties,this can only be done when they are groomed young like its said 'catch them young' Thanks
There is the need to define
By Tony Odiwe. There is the need to define the age bracket so that a lot of people will be accommodated. Anyway, I think the most important thing now is how to come together and join forces as up-coming scientist to be able to contribute meaningfully to the field especially here in Africa. Lets begin to think about common problem(s) and way forward rather than emphasising things that will divide us because the most important thing should be the advancement of Science to the benefits of mankind.
To clarify issues on the age
By GaellTo clarify issues on the age limit:
The website gather all the information of interest for Young Scientist. Definition of YS is arbitrary and vary accordingly.
This conference was primarily organized by ICSU that wanted to have YS below 35y of age. In this case, WAYS is not responsible for setting the limit.
WAYS primary goal is to empower young scientists, id est before they are PI. After getting such a position, one can assume that they know how to empower themselves.
However, anyone with a sound interest in science and for WAYS goals can become a member and can participate. The only restriction being that after 40y of age, one is not eligible to become a WAYS officer.
WAYS welcome "Less young" scientists:
a fruitful dialogue between generation is instrumental for any scientific careers and that's not really news:

Let me finish with Francois Gros' definition of a young scientist:
"a young scientist is a scientist of my age or less"
Always steps Always steps
By waris AliAlways steps
Always steps must be taken for the growth of the young scientists. In this way they chose the healthy direction of their interest and can utilise their ability and potentiality.
