Last February, with the support of ICSU Regional Office for Africa, ten selected young scientists from Sub Saharan African countries met in Pretoria to prepare the establishment of the World Academy of Young Scientists-Regional Office for Africa (WAYS-ROA).

Thanks to the constant support of ICSU Regional Office for Africa, WAYS-ROA will be launched on 21-22 March 2007.

This multidisciplinary and multinational African regional unit of WAYS will, among other functions:

• identify and bring together the most talented young scientists across Africa

• expose them to a rich scientific environment through collaboration with ICSU and through WAYS network

• bring young African scientists closer to development challenges in Africa

• and ultimately provide a critical mass of experts and expertise necessary to combat the many challenges facing the African continent.

The launch will serve to elect the first Regional Committee of WAYS-ROA. The constitutive meeting of the elected committee will be held in the presence of the delegates at which the draft constitution and action plan are to be tabled for deliberation and ratification. Regional portfolios and responsibilities will also be assigned to respective committee members.

This comment is directed at the organizer of the WAYS-ROA Launch.I like to draw your attention to the issue of agelimit of less than 40yrs for participation. Is this to mean that young scientists are less than 40yrs old?If this is true for other regions of the world, it is not true for Africa and particularly the West African subregion. Most of us had had our adeucation self-sponsored without any governmental fund or any sort of sponsorship. To get a PhD therefore takes a longer time. Moreover, grants for research works are most of the time not available and so many are late starters.I wish this issue can be addressed to accomodate more scientists in this group. Thank you for your kind consideration.

Of course scientists can be

By Gaell

Of course scientists can be productive above 40 years of age. (that would be preposterous) But in many countries there is already national and international institutions in place to host and nurture senior scientist careers.
Recognizing this need, WAYS has been created originally by UNESCO to help younger scientist careers. There is no magic number and 40 is as arbitrary as 35 or 45 would be.
However, WAYS tends not to stick that much to the 40yo issue and the website is open to anyone with a sound interest for science regardless of its age or its activity.
Indeed WAYS 2.0 would certainly benefit from the contribution of more experienced scientists.

For WAYS activities however especially for meetings and governance, according to its status, WAYS delegates young scientists only.

hope this helps.

I suggest scientists should

By Baveewosteven

I suggest scientists should be selected by virtue of their contribution to the development of the research discoveries,Although I should not hesitate to say that the young scientists as in below 35 years need strong consideration to ensure sustainablity of that research field is propagated from the old to the young.Gone are the days for the Researchers to be in the retiring age. I think if an individual got exposure to the research career ealier and therefore for a longer time period of his lifespan assuming the survival time is constant he will be most probably more productive than if he got exposure at 60 years! This is my opinion that can be subjected to critism.

Old graduates on

By Jayakar Johnson...

Old graduates on inter-disciplinary work require integration provisions of their basic discipline with the other disciplines in their further educational system, to get into the mainstream scientific society.

The upcoming launch of

By icuzochukwu

The upcoming launch of WAYS-ROA is a good start for young scientists in Africa. We are faced with several peculiar problems such as infrastracture and mentorship dearth.Africans are intelligent and talented. Given the right environment and leadership, great thing will begin to happen. We can also solve many of the developmental problems of our nations without necessarily using foreign models or methods. We can consider using the age limit of 45 because of the late entry of Africans into research. Working togather, we achieve much more.Whatever is believed can be done.

Every one should be

By waris Ali

Every one should be productive
Every one should be productive either he or she may be fourty or more or less than fourty. It is the authenticity due to the lack of resources people unable to get their Ph.D degree in time.
Therefore it is noticed that developed countries should arranged funds for the young scholars for getting their Ph.D degree in the time and then proved more creative and powerful and can bring the change for the betterment of the world
