Legal rights to ecosystems - Ecuador is about to give it a try

Ecuador is to vote on a new constitution next week which contains regulations on the transfer of so far human-only rights to abiotic entities like rivers and other ecosystems (including, by the way, the islands of Galapagos), in a timely attempt to engrave sustainable development, the conservation of biodiversity and related environmental policy goals into national law.

"Taalim-Forum" Public Foundation in the framework of "Place-based
education: communities outreach" Project supported by the Christensen
Fund (USA) is organizing a seminar "Ethnobiological Research Methods".
The project is aimed at strengthening the capacity of local
communities in comprehensive studying of their places of living.

Instructor: Gary Martin (Global Diversity Foundation, UK)

Language: English, Russian. Translation will be provided.

Seminar is aimed at helping young scientists, specialists and
researchers, interested in the issues of ethno-ecology/bio-culture,
studying traditional knowledge, and preservation of natural and
cultural diversity.

In this seminar participants will:
* Acquire skills to organize and conduct ethnobiological research;
* Master methods of biocultural diversity research;
* Find new perspectives for implementation of the knowledge and
skills acquired in their own professional and research activities.

The selection of participants will be conducted on a competitive
basis. Faculties, researchers and senior students from Kyrgyzstan,
Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are welcome to apply. Application and essay
forms as well as additional information about the project can be found
