Abstract

The South Asia sub-region is now in the forefront of the Open Access movement within developing countries in the world, with India being the most prominent partner in terms of its successful Open Access and Digital Library initiatives. Institutional and policy frameworks in India also facilitate innovative solutions for increasing international visibility and accessibility of scholarly literature and documentary heritage in this country. This publication has its genesis in the recommendations and proceedings of UNESCO-supported international conferences and workshops including the 4th International Conference of Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL2001, Bangalore); the International Conferences on Digital Libraries (ICDL2004 & ICDL2006, New Delhi); and the International Workshop on Greenstone Digital Library Software (2006, Kozhikode), where many information professionals of this sub-region demonstrated their Digital Library and Open Access initiatives. This book describes successful digital library and open access initiatives in the South Asia sub-region that are available in the forms of open courseware, open access journals, metadata harvesting services, national-level open access repositories and institutional repositories. This book may be considered an authoritative Source-book on Open Access development in this sub-region.

Malaria experts sought

-------- Original Message --------
Subject:
malaria based test kit
Date:
Sat, 23 Feb 2008 20:48:21 +0530
From:
samir somaiya <ssomaiya@mac.com>
Hi,

I was a mid-career MPA 2005. At that time, I attended a seminar on
science and technology by Calestous Juma at the Kennedy School.

During that seminar, there was a handout regarding millennium
development goals, and also regarding public health.

Among these, there was discussion on PCR kits, specially for malaria
and other such diseases. Inspired by such discussion,
after returning to India, I sponsored 2 scientists to work on the
development of a PCR kit for malaria, that is specific as well in
determining
the type of malaria. We further partnered with an educational
institution (I am a Trustee here) http://www.somaiya.edu, and we
tested the kits
on the blood samples of suspected malaria patients.

We have since conducted 200 tests, and find that the test is far
superior to the current conventional smear test. The analysis of
the results are enclosed.

Malaria is quite a problem, in Asia as well as India. Do you guys have
any ideas how we can show case this development, so that we can examine
the potential of

making and delivering these tests.

We expect each test to not cost the patient more than $10 (at least in India).

Can you guide? Can this mail go to others in this?

Sincerely

Samir Somaiya

Although Noni is present in Indian forests since time immemorial and in use as traditional medicine but at present it is in promotion as new medicinal crop in India. The Traditional health experts use it after purification and also its use is suggested to selected patients. Today Noni products are under promotion as panacea. It indicates that the promoters want to sell it anyhow by making false claims. Indian farmers earlier cheated in the name of Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivilanum) are now under influence of this new crop. The planting material suppliers are ready with seminars and big scheme with many hidden conditions. One of the purposes of this forum is to expose such malpractices whereas the main purpose is to put all facts about harms and benefits of this new crop through worldwide discussion.

You are invited to join this group.
