Bio

My research work primarily focused on nutrient management in lowland rice for better soil quality, carbon storage and moderating green house gas emissions. We determined the soil quality index of a 41 years old lowland rice-rice system under different nutrient management by non linear scoring method after identifying minimum data set by using multiple regression and principal component analysis. Further, it was also established that long term balanced application of farm yard manure (FYM) along with chemical fertilizers (NPK) increased soil aggregation and quality of soil organic carbon. Balanced fertilization showed a positive effect on rice yield and negatively affects weeds density, although the effect is negative but balance fertilization is not resulted in species elimination or hampered biodiversity. Although, annual global warming potential in terms of emissions of methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide was higher under NPK+FYM in tropical rice, but the emissions per unit grain yield were moderate under this treatment. Therefore, the combined application of NPK+FYM is a viable option in managing soil quality, moderating GHG emissions and sustaining rice yield in tropical flooded soils.
